How might I make a landscape that avoids perpetuating the colonialist gaze and purity politics––the very ideas that landscape painting was born out of? While this may not be wholly possible, this is the inquiry this series explores.

Unsightly proposes a more honest and mindful depiction of my environment. Rather than looking out over a horizon, I looked at the stolen, extracted, and beautiful land that I move through daily. The resulting landscapes are made up of humble materials and debris found in my environment. And like our environment, relationships, and bodies, they are messy, lumpy, unpolished, and impure.
